Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions is a specialist travel company focused on the Rwenzori Mountains and adventure travel in Uganda and East Africa. We are based in Uganda. Our Story: Why the Rwenzori Mountains and Why This Company
Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions was not created in a boardroom or as a portfolio extension of a multi-destination East Africa travel group. It was created from a specific place: the Kasese community at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains, by people whose professional lives have been shaped by the same mountain range they now help travellers to understand and experience. The company’s founders grew up in sight of the Rwenzori, the snow-capped peaks visible on clear mornings from the lower slopes, the forest beginning where the farmland ended, the mountain a constant geographical and cultural presence in daily life rather than a distant destination discovered through a travel brochure.
The motivation for creating Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions was straightforward: the Rwenzori Mountains deserved a specialist operator, an operator whose entire professional identity was built around this specific mountain range rather than around a portfolio of East African parks in which the Rwenzori appeared as one option among many. An operator whose guides were not sent on a training course and then deployed to lead expeditions they had never made before. Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions was created from the belief that the Rwenzori Mountains deserve more than to be treated as an optional alternative to Africa’s more famous mountains. Our Mountain Guides
Every guide employed by Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions holds current Uganda Wildlife Authority mountain guide certification, the mandatory credential required to lead trekking groups within Rwenzori Mountains National Park. For Margherita Peak and glacier expeditions, our lead guides additionally hold glacier guide certification that covers crampon technique, ice axe use, crevasse assessment, rope team management, and the specific protocol for leading non-technical trekkers across the Elena Glacier. All guides hold wilderness first aid qualifications with specific altitude sickness recognition and emergency response training. Beyond the certifications, our guides bring something that no certification course provides: years of specific experience on the exact trails, in the exact conditions, at the exact altitudes where they guide. The Elena Glacier in January is different from the Elena Glacier in July, and the guide who has made the crossing in both is a different asset to a trekking team than one who has read about those differences.
Our guides are also trained naturalists. The Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions naturalist program is not a formal accreditation; it is an informal but rigorous way to build species knowledge through daily field observation and ongoing mentorship from senior guides with exceptional ecological knowledge of the Rwenzori’s specific species and their micro-habitats. - Porters receive adequate food, appropriate shelter at mountain camps, and protection from weather conditions that is equivalent to the standards provided to the trekking team they are supporting. - The porter team’s knowledge of the mountain is in some ways more granular than the guides’; they know which path sections flood first after rain, which camp kitchens need specific fuel management in cold conditions, and how to move efficiently through terrain that would exhaust a trekker at twice the pace. They are not background logistics but a skilled mountain team, and the quality of every Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions excursion depends on their specific competence.

Step 1: Understanding Your Goals
Every expedition we plan begins with the same question: what are you actually trying to do? Be specific: how many days do you have? What is your group size? What is your fitness level and prior mountain experience? Which summit or experience is the primary objective? How does the Rwenzori fit into a broader Uganda itinerary, if any, and what is your budget range? Avoid generalities like “I want to trek in Uganda.” These are the variables that determine everything else. A team of two physically fit trekkers with eight days and a Margherita Peak objective requires an entirely different itinerary design from a family of four with five days and a wildlife-first priority. We do not assume one profile and adjust it; we ask about the specific person or group in front of us and build from there.
Step 2: Recommending the Right Route
With your objectives understood, we match you to the route, duration, and peak that best serves them. This recommendation is honest rather than commercially motivated. If the 9-day Central Circuit Trail is not the right choice for your available time and fitness level, we say so and propose the 7-day Kilembe Trail or the 6-day Portal Peaks Trek instead. If the Margherita Peak glacier section is likely to be outside the comfort zone of a first-time high-altitude trekker in your group, we say so and propose the Portal Peaks or Baker and Weismann’s as more appropriate first Rwenzori summit objectives. We are the only people in this conversation with the specific mountain knowledge to make these assessments accurately, and we take that responsibility seriously.
Step 3: Planning the Full Logistics
Once the route and duration are confirmed, the logistics planning begins. Uganda Wildlife Authority permits are booked for your specific dates. Mountain hut and camp accommodation is confirmed for every night of the itinerary. The guide team is assigned based on the itinerary’s specific requirements; a Margherita Peak expedition requires a glacier-certified lead guide; a trail wildlife day requires a guide with specialist ornithological knowledge. Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — three to four hours south of Kasese — is the most popular combination with any Rwenzori expedition, and we coordinate the booking of gorilla permits from the Uganda Wildlife Authority as part of combined packages.
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park, two hours north of Kasese, is a natural complement to the Diamond Trail’s wild chimpanzee experience and is coordinated with the same logistics care.

The Central Circuit and Kilembe Trail have different characters, different ecological emphases, different summit logistics, and different difficulty profiles at comparable durations. We assess your specific objectives, fitness level, and available time and recommend honestly, including recommending against routes that are not appropriate for your profile.
For peak-season departures, June through August and January through February. We recommend contacting us three to six months in advance, particularly for private expeditions on specific dates and for itineraries that include gorilla trekking permits, which are strictly limited. For shoulder and wet-season departures, two to three months’ lead time is generally adequate. For customized or complex combined itineraries, more planning time always produces better results.
All standard Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions packages include Uganda Wildlife Authority park permits, a certified mountain guide, a porter team, a mountain chef and full-board catering, mountain hut accommodation, glacier equipment for Margherita Peak expeditions, and private 4WD trailhead transfers. International flights, Uganda visas, travel insurance, and personal gear are not included. Complete itemized inclusions and exclusions are provided with every package quotation.
