9-Day Mount Speke, Mount Stanley (Margherita Peak), & Mount Baker Rwenzori Trek

The 9-day Mount Speke, Mount Stanley & Mount Baker Rwenzori trek takes you through the Central Circuit Trail route to Vittorio Emanuele Peak (4,890 m), Margherita Peak (5,109 m), and Edward Peak (4,843 m) in the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as “the Mountains of the Moon.”

Three peaks. Three massifs. Nine days in one of Earth’s most extraordinary mountain systems. This is the Rwenzori as it was always meant to be climbed.

This 9-day Rwenzori trek to Mount Speke, Mount Stanley & Mount Baker begins and ends at Nyakalengija Gate, ascending through the complete Central Circuit Trail to summit Vittorio Emanuele Peak on Mount Speke (4,890 m) on Day Four, crossing the Elena Glacier to Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley (5,109 m) on Day Six, traversing the Freshfield Pass to Kitandara, and summiting Edward Peak on Mount Baker (4,843 m) on Day Eight before descending via Guy Yeoman Hut to Nyabitaba Hut and the gate on Day Nine. Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions guides this nine-day circuit with glacier-certified expertise, a continuous guide team, and the logistical precision that three summit days across nine demanding days of mountain terrain require.

This is not three separate Rwenzori treks joined together. It is a single, elegantly designed circuit that uses the Central Circuit Trail‘s complete hut system, Nyabitaba, John Matte, Bujuku, Elena, Kitandara, and Guy Yeoman, in a logical, progressive sequence that allows proper acclimatization before each summit and a sustained immersion in the Rwenzori’s five altitude zones from equatorial forest to permanent glacier. The Freshfield Pass traverse on Day Seven, connecting the Elena Glacier side of the mountain to the Kitandara Lakes basin, is one of the finest high-mountain crossings in East Africa, a route used by fewer than a few hundred trekkers per year and offering panoramic views of the mountain system’s southern arc that no other Rwenzori itinerary delivers. Three peaks. One continuous journey. The Rwenzori is presented in its most complete and accessible form.

Why trek/hike Rwenzori’s Mount Speke, Mount Stanley, & Mount Baker peaks via the Central Circuit?

The 9-day Mount Speke, Mount Stanley & Mount Baker (3 Peaks) Trek via the Central Circuit Trail occupies a specific and highly rewarding position between the standard eight-day Margherita Peak expedition and the full thirteen-day six-peaks grand circuit. It adds one day to the eight-day Margherita itinerary to include two more summit objectives — Mount Speke and Mount Baker — on the same Central Circuit Trail, using the Freshfield Pass traverse to complete a genuine circuit of the mountain’s central massifs without retracing the approach route.

The Freshfield Pass traverse is the defining innovation of this nine-day format and the element that most distinguishes it from the standard Margherita itinerary. Rather than descending the way the expedition came, Day Seven crosses the Freshfield Pass, a high mountain col between the Elena Glacier and the Kitandara Lakes basin, delivering trekkers to an entirely new perspective on the Rwenzori’s central peaks. The Kitandara Lakes, seen from above on the descent, are among the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in East Africa, and arriving at them via the Freshfield Pass rather than ascending from the Kilembe side gives the northern approach an additional quality of revelation. The Baker summit from Kitandara on Day Eight, ascending Edward Peak’s eastern face, is then a different mountain from a different direction, with views back toward Margherita and Speke that the standard itinerary never delivers.

The nine-day Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Mount Stanley circuit trek is a natural and deeply satisfying progression for trekkers who have completed the 8-day Margherita expedition and wish to return to the Rwenzori for a more complete experience. The 9-day Rwenzori trek to 3 peaks, Mount Baker, Stanley, and the Speke Summit Circuit, is the most rewarding single first expedition the mountain offers for trekkers approaching the Rwenzori for the first time and with the fitness and altitude experience to support it.

Detailed 9-Day Mount Baker, Mount Stanley, & Mount Speke

What follows is the 9-day Rwenzori triple peaks trek circuit as it is actually experienced, written by guides who have led every summit day on this route and consider it among the finest extended mountain journeys available in East Africa.

Day 1: Nyakalengija Gate (1,646 m) → Nyabitaba Hut (2,650 m)

The 9-day Mount Speke, Stanley & Baker begins at Nyakalengija Gate with the particular clarity of purpose that a triple-peaks itinerary generates: the knowledge that three summits over the next nine days creates a focused, directional awareness that colors even this first day’s forest walk differently from a shorter trek. Your certified glacier-qualified lead guide, selected by Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions for the technical demands of this specific itinerary, sets the first day’s pace with the measured authority of someone managing not just today’s energy but the accumulated effort of eight more days ahead.

Rwenzori Central Circuit tail trail

The nine-kilometer ascent through primary montane rainforest follows the lower section of the Central Circuit Trail, with its enormous Podocarpus and mahogany canopy, a wooden bridge crossing the Mubuku River gorge above rushing amber water, colobus monkeys in the upper canopy, and the Rwenzori turaco calling from the mid-story. These encounters belong to the lower forest, and the guide’s naturalist commentary turns the approach into a genuine ecological immersion rather than a warm-up for the altitude above. Nyabitaba Hut arrives in the late afternoon, its ridge viewpoint opening the first panorama of the valley below and the heather ridges above.

Accommodation: Night 1

Nyabitaba Hut (2,650 m): The Central Circuit’s first overnight, positioned on a heather ridge above the Mubuku Valley with views of the upper mountain on clear evenings.

Day 2: Nyabitaba Hut (2,650 m) → John Matte Hut (3,380 m)

The Kurt Shafer Bridge crossing is the day’s first landmark, a wooden span over the Bujuku River gorge where the water roars deep below the bridge planks and the moss-covered walls of the gorge catch what light filters through the heather canopy above.

Best Attractions in Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Beyond the bridge, the heather zone asserts itself completely, with Erica arborea, eight to ten meters tall and wrapped in pale lichen, while the path threads between them and across the first of the Rwenzori’s famous peat bogs. Giant groundsels appear on the ridgelines above the first of many over the following days, their palmate rosettes perched on trunks that represent decades of one-centimeter-per-year growth.

John Matte Hut arrives after six to seven hours, named for one of the Rwenzori’s most celebrated local guides. At 3,380 meters, the temperature has dropped noticeably from the gate, and the heather clearing that surrounds the hut carries the particular stillness of altitude in the early evening. The guide’s briefing over dinner covers the next day’s push to Bujuku and the acclimatization considerations above 3,500 meters. Three summits are still five days away, but the mountain’s seriousness begins to be felt here.

Accommodation — Night 2

John Matte Hut (3,380 m), the heather zone’s primary shelter, is positioned at the boundary between the lower transition zone and the upper Afro-alpine environment.

Day 3: John Matte Hut (3,380 m) → Bujuku Hut (3,962 m)

Day Three pushes into the upper heather-lobelia zone and brings the expedition to the Bujuku glacial basin, the central arena of the Rwenzori’s high country, where three of the six major massifs can be seen at the same time. The trail from John Matté climbs through increasingly extraordinary vegetation: giant lobelias five meters tall at the trail edges, the peat bogs of the upper moorland crossed via wooden boardwalks, and the heather pressing close on both sides. Then, as the valley opens, Lake Bujuku appears turquoise, still, and impossibly beautiful at 3,962 meters, its surface a perfect mirror of the Stanley and Baker ridgelines above it.

Lake bujuku

Bujuku Hut sits above the lake on the cirque rim, commanding views of Mount Stanley’s glacier above, Mount Baker’s ridgeline to the east, and the valley floor far below. This is the expedition’s first genuine high-altitude camp, and the afternoon acclimatization walk above the hut, studying the line of tomorrow’s Speke summit approach, gives the body time to adapt to the altitude while the mind absorbs the scale of what the next six days will ask of it.

Accommodation — Night 3

Bujuku Hut (3,962 m) — The Central Circuit’s central plateau hut, with three-peak views and the finest position for observing the relationship between the Rwenzori’s three highest massifs.

Day 4: Summit 1 — Vittorio Emanuele Peak, Mount Speke (4,890 m) → Bujuku Hut

The first summit of the triple peaks circuit is Vittorio Emanuele Peak on Mount Speke at 4,890 meters, Africa’s second-highest Rwenzori summit and the finest rock scramble approach among the three peaks. The ascent from Bujuku Hut gains nearly 1,000 meters in a long, sustained push through the boulder fields and snowline approaches of the Speke massif’s western face, with fixed rope assistance on the steeper upper sections and your guide’s measured pace management throughout.

Mount Speke Of Rwenzori Mountains

The summit of Vittorio Emanuele at 4,890 meters delivers the expedition’s first stunning panorama: Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley is visible now as an immediate objective rather than a distant silhouette, the Elena Glacier catching morning light on the Stanley Plateau above, and the entire Bujuku basin spread below the lake, the hut, the valley floor, and the approach trails threading upward from the heather zone.

Two of the three peaks are visible from the summit ridge. One down; two ahead. The return to Bujuku Hut is a long afternoon descent on legs that have now been introduced to what summit days in the Rwenzori cost. The dinner at Bujuku has a different quality after the first summit.

Summit 1 Achieved

Vittorio Emanuele Peak, Mount Speke, 4,890 m. Africa’s second-highest Rwenzori summit. From the top, Margherita Peak is visible above the Elena Glacier. The triple peaks trek’s first chapter is complete.

Accommodation — Night 4

Bujuku Hut (3,962 m) — Post-Speke summit recovery night. The body needs rest; the hut provides it with a second night at the same camp before the Elena push.

Day 5: Bujuku Hut (3,962 m) → Elena Hut (4,541 m) — Glacier Briefing

Day Five is the expedition’s transitional day, shorter in walking distance than any other stage but carrying the particular psychological weight of a day that ends beside the Elena Glacier with Margherita Peak visible above. The seven-kilometer ascent from Bujuku to Elena Hut gains approximately 580 meters through the upper boulder field above the lake basin, above the lobelia zone, and into the pre-glacier environment, where the air thins noticeably and the landscape loses its botanical softness, becoming rock, moraine, and ice.

Elena Hut, at 4,541 meters, is positioned at the exact boundary between the world of mountain trekking and the world of alpine mountaineering. The glacier wall above fills the upper horizon. Margherita’s summit pyramid is visible in breaks in the afternoon cloud. The evening is devoted entirely to preparation: your glacier-certified lead guide conducts the full technical briefing on crampon fitting, harness check, rope technique on ice, and route description across the Stanley Plateau to the final rock scramble. The alarm is set for 2 a.m. Two summits have already been achieved. The largest summit day of the expedition begins in seven hours.

Accommodation — Night 5

Elena Hut (4,541 m), the highest hut in the Rwenzori, is beside the Elena Glacier. Tomorrow: Africa’s third-highest summit.

Day 6: Summit 2 — Margherita Peak, Mount Stanley (5,109 m) → Elena Hut

The pre-dawn departure from Elena Hut at 2 a.m. begins the expedition’s most technically demanding and most consequential day. Crampons are fitted by headtorch. Harnesses checked. The glacier-certified lead guide leads the group onto the Elena Glacier as the stars pale above the Stanley Plateau. The ice crossing demands absolute focus, fixed ropes on the steeper sections, the guide’s commands clear across the pre-dawn wind, and the body working at altitude that the Speke and John Matte acclimatization days have prepared it for but that still commands its full attention.

The Stanley Plateau — one of the last equatorial ice fields in Africa, retreating measurably year on year — opens above the glacier into the pre-dawn quiet. The final rock scramble to Margherita’s summit ridge is technical, exhilarating, and brief. And then: 5,109 meters. Africa’s third highest point. The summit of the nine-day expedition’s second peak and the Rwenzori’s highest. The Congo Basin lay to the west, shrouded in the first morning haze. The Uganda Rift Valley catches gold to the east. Mount Speke, yesterday’s summit, is visible on the ridgeline below. Mount Baker, tomorrow’s objective, is to the south. The three-peak panorama, from the highest of the three peaks.

6 days Rwenzori trek to Margherita Peak

The summit moment at Margherita is the emotional center of the nine-day expedition. Most trekkers spend twenty minutes on the summit, enough for the full weight of the achievement to settle before the careful descent back across the glacier begins. By mid-morning, the expedition is back at Elena Hut with warm tea, the particular relief of having the glacier behind rather than ahead, and the knowledge that tomorrow’s Freshfield Pass traverse will take the journey somewhere new.

Summit 2 Achieved

Margherita Peak, Mount Stanley — 5,109 m. Africa’s third-highest summit. The glacier is crossed, the plateau is stood on, and the summit is reached. Two peaks complete. One remains.

Accommodation — Night 6

Elena Hut (4,541 m) — Post-Margherita summit recovery night at the glacier camp. A second night at the highest hut, earned completely.

Day 7: Elena Hut → Freshfield Pass → Kitandara Hut (4,023 m)

Day Seven is the expedition’s most scenically extraordinary day: the Freshfield Pass traverse that connects the Elena Glacier’s northern aspect to the Kitandara Lakes basin on the mountain’s southern side, crossing a high mountain col that delivers a simultaneous view of both perspectives in a single sweeping panorama that no other position in the Rwenzori system provides. The trail from Elena Hut climbs briefly to the Freshfield Pass before descending into the southern cirque, and the moment the pass crests and the Kitandara Lakes appear below in their turquoise stillness, with Baker’s ridgeline rising to the east, is one of the great mountain reveal moments of the entire nine days.

The descent to Kitandara Hut follows the southern slope of the Freshfield col through boulder fields and the upper reaches of the lobelia zone, arriving at the twin lakes in the late morning or early afternoon, with time at the hut to rest, eat, and study the Baker summit route that tomorrow will require. Kitandara Hut, at 4,023 meters, is one of the Rwenzori’s most atmospherically beautiful camps, and in the evening there, the lakes reflecting the last light and the mountain silhouettes dark above the cirque rim provide the expedition’s most serene overnight after its most dramatic summit.

Accommodation — Night 7

Kitandara Hut (4,023 m) — Twin glacial lakes in a southern cirque basin, arrived at via the Freshfield Pass traverse. The circuit’s most beautiful overnight position.

Day 8: Summit 3 — Edward Peak, Mount Baker (4,843 m) → Guy Yeoman Hut (3,505 m)

Day Eight is the expedition’s longest and most demanding single day, a triple-element push that combines the Baker summit and a descent to the Guy Yeoman Hut area and covers the largest total altitude change of the nine-day itinerary. It is also the day that completes the triple peaks circuit: the third summit, the third massif, and the third panorama of the Rwenzori high country from a different angle and a different height.

The ascent to Edward Peak on Mount Baker begins from Kitandara Hut in the early morning, climbing the Baker massif’s approach via the southern ridge, a sustained rock scramble that gains approximately 820 meters from the lakes to the 4,843-meter summit. At this point in the expedition, Day Eight, with Speke and Margherita, the body has already accumulated the altitude and effort of seven mountain days, and the Baker summit requires the particular determination that comes from genuinely having earned the approach. The summit of Edward Peak at 4,843 meters delivers the triple peaks circuit’s final great view: Margherita visible above the Elena Glacier to the north, Speke’s profile to the east, the Kitandara Lakes glinting in the cirque below, and the full southern arc of the Rwenzori’s central massif system spread in every direction.

The descent from Baker to Guy Yeoman Hut at 3,505 meters is the longest of the expedition, a sustained downward push through the heather zone on legs that have now summited three Rwenzori peaks in five days. Your guide manages the descent pace with the same attention to sustainable effort that has characterized every day of the nine. Guy Yeoman Hut arrives in the late afternoon, and the dinner that your chef has ready carries the accumulated satisfaction of an expedition that has achieved exactly what it set out to achieve.

Summit 3 Achieved

Edward Peak, Mount Baker — 4,843 m. The third and final summit of the triple peaks circuit. Three Rwenzori massifs. Three summits above 4,800 m. The circuit is complete.

Accommodation — Night 8

Guy Yeoman Hut (3,505 m) marks the expedition’s final mountain night, reached after the Baker summit and a long descent. Eight mountain days behind; one descent day ahead.

Day 9: Guy Yeoman Hut (3,505 m) → Nyabitaba Hut → Nyakalengija Gate → Kasese

The final day descends the full lower Central Circuit Trail from Guy Yeoman Hut through the heather zone, through the transition forest, across the Mubuku River bridge that the expedition first crossed on Day One, and back to Nyakalengija Gate. It is a long day, seven to eight hours of descent, and the body that walks it has changed fundamentally from the body that entered the gate nine days ago. Three summits. Five different high camps. The Elena Glacier was crossed and returned from. The Freshfield Pass was traversed. The Kitandara Lakes are seen from above. The Rwenzori, in its most complete central circuit expression, experienced fully and from the inside

Freshfield Pass at the central circuit trail route

The gate. The Uganda Wildlife Authority exit register. The triple peaks summit certificate is presented by your lead guide with the particular satisfaction of someone who has led an expedition of this ambition to its complete and successful conclusion. The porter and guide team gathers for a farewell that nine shared days on the mountain have given genuine weight. Your private vehicle is waiting. The western Uganda road back to Kasese or Kampala begins. The Rwenzori’s three summits, Speke, Stanley, and Baker, recede in the rearview mirror, already becoming the kind of memory that takes years to fully absorb.

Logistics — Day 9

Drive from Nyakalengija Gate to Kasese: ~30 mins. To Kampala: ~5–6 hours. Onward connections to Bwindi gorilla trekking, Kibale chimpanzees, or Entebbe Airport can be coordinated by Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions.

How Difficult Is the 9-Day Trek to Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Mount Stanley Peaks?

The nine-day Mount Baker, Mount Peke, & Mount Stanley Trek is rated very strenuous, a sustained, multi-summit expedition that requires excellent cardiovascular fitness, meaningful prior high-altitude experience, and the particular mental resilience that consecutive summit days at altitude demand. It is more demanding than the standard 8-day Margherita expedition due to three factors: the addition of the Speke summit on Day Four before the Margherita glacier on Day Six, the Freshfield Pass traverse on Day Seven after two consecutive summit days, and the Baker summit on Day Eight after seven days of accumulated mountain effort.

Trekkers who have completed the eight-day Margherita Peak expedition and are returning to the Rwenzori are well-positioned for the nine-day Rwenzori trek to 3 peaks format. First-time Rwenzori trekkers with prior high-altitude experience above 4,000 meters and excellent fitness are equally suitable candidates, provided their preparation is thorough. Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions conducts a fitness and experience assessment for all nine-day triple peaks bookings and provides a comprehensive training program to all confirmed trekkers.

The Margherita glacier crossing on Day Six remains the technical centerpiece of the expedition, fully managed by glacier-certified guides, requiring no prior glacier experience from trekkers but demanding the cumulative physical capacity of five previous days of mountain effort. The Baker summit on Day Eight, coming after the two previous summit days and the Freshfield traverse, is the most fatigue-dependent of the three peaks, requiring strong pacing discipline and the kind of determination that nine days in the Rwenzori either builds or does not.

Difficulty Rating

Very strenuous | 3 summits | 9 days | Max altitude 5,109 m (Margherita). Prior high-altitude experience above 3,500 m is strongly recommended. Glacier crossing on Day 6: full guide instruction and equipment provided. This is not recommended as a first high-altitude experience.

Is the Rwenzori safe? Expedition Safety on the Triple Peaks Circuit

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park is a well-managed, secure protected area under Uganda Wildlife Authority jurisdiction. The nine-day peaks circuit is one of the more complex Rwenzori expeditions from a safety management perspective; three summit days, a glacier crossing, and nine days of accumulated high-altitude exposure require a guide team operating at the highest standard of mountain safety management.

Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions has comprehensive safety protocols for all nine days of this expedition:

First-aid-trained guides carry medical kits throughout; a glacier-certified lead guide is responsible for the Margherita Day Six crossing; emergency communication protocols are filed with the Uganda Wildlife Authority before departure and maintained via satellite communication equipment throughout the expedition; and there is a complete emergency evacuation plan for any trekker who needs to descend due to altitude illness or injury.

Altitude sickness (AMS) monitoring is continuous across all nine days; the guide team’s greatest safety focus is above John Matte Hut. Comprehensive travel insurance with emergency medical and evacuation coverage is mandatory and verified before the expedition begins.

Best Time to Trek Mount Speke, Mount Stanley & Mount Baker

The nine-day Rwenzori trek to the Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and Mount Baker peaks circuit includes a glacier crossing and two high-altitude rock scramble summits, making it more weather-dependent than shorter Rwenzori itineraries. The three summit days: Days 4, 6, and 8 all require reliable weather windows that the Rwenzori’s shoulder rainy seasons cannot consistently provide.

June to August — Peak Season

The long dry season offers the most reliable summit weather for all three peak days, the most manageable glacier conditions on the Margherita Day Six crossing, and the best trail conditions throughout the circuit. Advance booking for June-August departures is essential; this expedition format fills early with experienced trekkers.

December to February Secondary Season

A strong secondary window with comparable conditions to peak season. January departures are particularly favored for the quality of early morning light on the Elena Glacier and the Kitandara Lakes. December and January bookings should be secured at least six months in advance.

Shoulder Seasons

The nine-day Rwenzori trek to Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, and Mount Speke circuits is not recommended during the March-May and SeptemberNovember rainy seasons. Three summit days in shoulder-season weather conditions create an unacceptable probability of weather-forced turnarounds that compress the expedition’s achievement. Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions schedules all triple peaks expedition departures during the two dry-season windows.

What Should I Pack for the 9-Day Triple Peaks Trek?

The 9-day Rwenzori trek to Mount Baker, Mount Speke, & Mount Stanley’s summit days and the full Central Circuit altitude range require the most comprehensive packing system of any standard Rwenzori itinerary. The glacier crossing on Day Six and the pre-dawn Baker summit push on Day Eight require specific cold-weather and technical items.

Footwear

Waterproof, ankle-supporting trekking boots with a stiff sole compatible with crampon attachment essential for Day Six. Three to four pairs of moisture-wicking trekking socks. Waterproof gaiters for bog crossings throughout Days Two and Three. Lightweight camp shoes for hut evenings.

Clothing

Moisture-wicking base layers in at least four complete sets for nine days. A 600-fill or higher down jacket is needed for Elena Hut nights and pre-dawn summit starts, as temperatures at Elena can approach -10°C. Fully waterproof, breathable shell jacket and trousers. Balaclava, warm hat, and summit gloves (insulated). Inner glove liner. UV-rated glacier goggles for Day Six. No cotton above the lower forest zone.

Equipment

Trekking poles are non-negotiable for nine days, including long descents on Days Eight and Nine. A daypack of 30–35 liters. A headtorch with spare batteries for pre-dawn summit starts on days four, six, and eight. A sleeping bag rated to -15°C for Elena Hut. Water bottles or hydration bladders with 2-liter capacity. Sunscreen SPF 50+. Water purification tablets as backup.

Health

Altitude medication: discuss Diamox prophylactic use with your physician before departure; the triple peaks circuit spends five nights above 3,900 m. Personal first-aid kit. High-calorie snacks for three summit days. A thermos flask is needed for the pre-dawn glacier start on Day Six.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mount Speke, Mount Stanley & Mount Baker

The nine-day Rwenzori trek summits three peaks: Vittorio Emanuele Peak on Mount Speke (4,890 m) on Day Four, Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley (5,109 m) on Day Six, and Edward Peak on Mount Baker (4,843 m) on Day Eight. Together they cover three of the Rwenzori’s four highest massifs in a single connected circuit that begins and ends at Nyakalengija Gate.

The nine-day triple peaks circuit adds two additional summit days, Mount Speke on day four and Mount Baker on day eight, to the standard 8-day Margherita itinerary. It also introduces the Freshfield Pass traverse on Day Seven, connecting the Elena Glacier side of the mountain to the Kitandara Lakes basin and completing a genuine circuit of the central Rwenzori massifs rather than retracing the ascent route. The result is a more demanding, more complete, and significantly more scenically varied expedition than the standard Margherita itinerary.

The Freshfield Pass is a high mountain col at approximately 4,200 meters that connects the Elena Glacier basin on the mountain’s northern aspect to the Kitandara Lakes basin on the southern side. On Day Seven of the nine-day Mount Speke, Mount Baker & Mount Stanley peaks circuit, it is traversed and offers a simultaneous panorama of both mountain aspects: Margherita and Speke to the north, Baker’s ridgeline to the east, and the Kitandara Lakes below in their turquoise stillness on the southern descent. The Freshfield traverse is one of the finest high-mountain crossings in the Rwenzori system and a significant differentiator of the nine-day circuit format.

You do not need any prior glacier experience. The Margherita glacier crossing on Day Six is fully led by Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions‘ glacier-certified lead guide. A comprehensive technical briefing, crampon fitting, rope technique, and route description are conducted at Elena Hut on the evening of Day Five. All other summit days (Speke and Baker) involve rock scramble approaches with no glacier travel.

Day Eight is the most physically demanding single day of the triple peaks circuit, combining the Baker summit at 4,843 meters with a long descent to Guy Yeoman Hut at 3,505 meters, covering approximately 16 kilometers and 1,300+ meters of combined ascent and descent on the eighth day of a nine-day expedition. Day Six (Margherita Glacier crossing) is the most technically demanding and the most altitude-demanding in terms of summit height.

Yes, with an additional day, a visit to the Mount Emin or Mount Gessi northern massifs can be incorporated into an extended expedition before the standard circuit phases. The full thirteen-day six-peaks grand circuit expedition covers all six Rwenzori massifs, including Emin (Umberto Peak, 4,798 m) and Gessi (Iolanda Peak, 4,715 m). Contact Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions to discuss extended expedition design

The nine-day Rwenzori trek to Mount Baker, Mount Stanley, and Mount Speke peaks circuit includes nights at Nyabitaba Hut (2,650 m), John Matte Hut (3,505 m), Bujuku Hut (3,962 m—2 nights), Elena Hut (4,541 m—2 nights), Kitandara Hut (4,023 m), and Guy Yeoman Hut (3,505 m). Elena Hut, at 4,541 meters, is the highest sleeping altitude on the circuit and the most altitude-demanding position for acclimatization. A sleeping bag rated to -15°C is required.

Pricing reflects the full package of UWA permits, a glacier-certified guide, a porter team, a mountain chef, eight nights of hut accommodation, technical summit equipment, and private transportation across nine days. Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions provides fully transparent, itemized pricing upon inquiry. Contact the team for current rates and private expedition availability.

Yes, private expeditions for solo trekkers are available throughout the year and are the recommended format for the 9-day Rwenzori trek to Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Mount Stanley Peak circuit. A private format better serves the specialist guide assignment, individualized pace management, and personalized safety monitoring that a three-summit expedition demands. Solo trekkers receive the full glacier-certified guide, porter support, and chef as standard.

The 9-day Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and Mount Baker Peak trek uses a progressive, staged acclimatization profile: Night One at Nyabitaba (2,650 m), Night Two at John Matte (3,380 m), and two nights at Bujuku (3,962 m) before the Elena push. The double night at Bujuku, which provides an acclimatization day with the Speke summit on Day Four, is the critical acclimatization stage of the circuit, preparing the body for the Elena Hut nights at 4,541 m and the Margherita Glacier crossing. The two Elena nights similarly prepare the body for the Baker summit on Day Eight, following the Freshfield traverse.

The nine-day Rwenzori trek to Speke, Stanley & Baker peaks circuit requires a guide team with certified glacier expertise (Margherita, Day Six), deep familiarity with the Freshfield Pass traverse (Day Seven, rarely used by other operators); and the ability to manage cumulative fatigue across three summit days and nine mountain days. Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions is the only specialist Rwenzori operator whose glacier-certified guides have led every section of this specific circuit across multiple seasons, in all conditions. Our Bakonzo porter and guide team is paid at fair rates, our safety protocols are current and comprehensive, and our commitment to this single mountain range means every piece of knowledge we accumulate serves the trekkers who trust us with their expedition.

All lead guides employed by Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions speak fluent English and Rutooro (the regional language of western Uganda). Most also speak Lhukonjo, the language of the Bakonjo porter community. Several of our senior guides speak French and basic Swahili. If your group includes non-English speakers, please advise us at the time of booking, and we will do our best to accommodate them with guide assignment or supplementary translation.

Yes, and this combination is one of the most rewarding Western Uganda itineraries available. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (gorilla trekking) is approximately two hours from Kasese by road, and Kibale National Park (chimpanzee tracking) is approximately one hour away. Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions can coordinate the nine-day triple peaks circuit within a broader Uganda itinerary that includes gorilla permits, chimpanzee tracking, and Queen Elizabeth National Park game drives. See our 16-day Uganda Gorillas and Rwenzori Trekking safari for a complete combined itinerary.

The 9-day circuit traverses the full altitude range of the Rwenzori wildlife zones. In the lower forest (Days 1, 2, and 9): black-and-white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, Rwenzori turacos, African green broadbills, and numerous Albertine Rift endemic birds. In the heather-lobelia zone (Days 2–3 and Day 9), we observed giant groundsels, lobelias, a scarlet-tufted sunbird, and a handsome francolin. At the high camps (Days 3–8): occasional lammergeiers at altitude, the botanical drama of the Afro-alpine zone, and the stunning Kitandara Lakes waterbird community on Day Seven.

Kitandara Hut is positioned between the twin Kitandara Lakes at 4,023 meters, two glacially formed bodies of water in a cirque basin on the mountain’s southern side, accessible on the nine-day circuit via the Freshfield Pass traverse on Day Seven. The hut’s location between the two lakes is one of the most atmospherically beautiful overnight positions in the entire Rwenzori system, and arriving there via the Freshfield Pass, with Margherita already climbed and Baker still ahead, creates one of the expedition’s most memorable contrasts of achievement and anticipation.

Altitude sickness (AMS) is a genuine consideration on any trek above 3,000 metres, and the nine-day triple peaks circuit spends five nights above 3,900 m. The acclimatization profile is designed to reduce AMS risk, but individual responses vary. Discussing Diamox (acetazolamide) prophylactic use with your physician before departure is strongly recommended for this expedition. Your glacier-certified lead guide monitors all trekkers continuously for AMS and HACE symptoms. The protocol for any trekker displaying neurological altitude illness symptoms is immediate descent, regardless of summit proximity.

Pricing for multi-peak Rwenzori Expeditions depends on group size, season, and the specific inclusions selected and is usually higher than for a single-summit Margherita Peak trek because of the extra guiding and technical equipment needed for Speke and Baker. Contact our team for a personalized quote, or see our Rwenzori Trekking Cost page for a full breakdown.

Why book your 9-day Rwenzori trek to Mount Speke, Mount Baker & Mount Stanley with Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions?

We are a Ugandan-owned specialist operator working exclusively within the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, and this itinerary, three summits, one circuit, eight days, represents the fullest expression of what our guiding team knows about this range. Our lead mountain guides have summited Margherita Peak more times than they can easily count, hold the technical qualifications required for glacier travel on the Stanley Plateau, and are drawn from Bakonzo communities who have lived beside these mountains for generations. That is not a marketing claim; it is the difference between a guide reading a route description and a guide who knows, from memory, which section of the Elena Glacier has changed since last season.

Every triple-peak booking with us is planned individually, group sizes are capped intentionally, contingency time is built into the schedule to protect your summit chances, and every permit, hut booking, and transfer is confirmed before you arrive so that nothing about your eight days on the mountain is left to chance. We would be glad to help you plan the rest of a Uganda journey around this trek as well, whether that means gorilla trekking in Bwindi, game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, or the extended Uganda safari itineraries we also operate.

Explore our full range of Rwenzori trekking options, including the 3-Day Lake Mahoma Trek for a shorter introduction to the range, or our comprehensive

16-Day Uganda Grand Safari, which combines Rwenzori trekking with gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and Uganda’s premier wildlife parks.
