Mount Speke & Mount Stanley Rwenzori Trekking Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Nyakalengija 1650m – Nyabitaba Camp 2650m +25°C

You will be greeted by our dynamic staff at the Rwenzori Mountains National Park entrance, who will facilitate your initial registration process for the climb. Subsequently, you will receive a briefing in which the routing of the central circuit will be elucidated in detail. Upon meeting your guides and the full crew assigned to assist you, you will commence your trek equipped with a backpack including rain gear and all essential hiking supplies. Ensure that the heavier items and equipment are left with the primary bag carried by the porters.You will then enter the verdant tropical jungle, trekking along the mountain’s base. On Mount Rwenzori, you will come across steep and mild slopes as you ascend. Once you reach the forest camp Nyabitaba camp, you will be greeted by a rock shelter after a long trek. Appreciate the magnificent vistas of the Portal peaks and the melodious birdsong.

Day 2: Nyabitaba Camp at 1650m – Johnmaate Camp at 3505m, temperature +15°C

On this day, you will proceed to John Matte, a lengthy and sometimes exhausting trek that traverses the junction of the Mubbuku and Bujuku Rivers. Day 3: John Matte (3380m) to Bujuku (3962m)

The third day of your 8 days Mount  Speke Mount Stanley expedition commences at Bujuku with a hearty breakfast. Subsequently, you will traverse the Bujuku River to reach the stunning swamp of huge lobelias, known as the Lower Bigo Bog. While navigating the lower Bigo Bog, enjoy the exhilarating boardwalk that guides you to a steep incline leading to the higher Bigo Bog, a region marked by its marshy terrain and groundsels.  This will lead to an expansive terrain of tussocks and a treacherous section adjacent to Lake Bujuku, where a boardwalk facilitates navigation of the slippery path, following which you traverse the tussocks until reaching Bujuku Camp. Dinner and overnight accommodations will be provided here, where the three peaks of Stanley, Baker, and Speke create a triangular formation, thereby defining the Bujuku Valley.

Day 4: Bujuku Camp at 3900m – Mount Speke (Victoria Emmanuel Peak at 4520m)

 

On day four of your eight-day expedition, you will ascend to the initial peak, Mount Speke.

You will traverse the Stuhlmans Pass, where a distinguished explorer identified that Rwenzori  Mountains comprises not merely a solitary mountain but an entire range, and adeptly delineated the vegetation zones of the Rwenzori Mountains from the foothills to the snowline.  You will traverse the snowline of Mount Speke via this pass and reach the summit of Mount Speke, which stands at an elevation of 4,520 meters, making it the fourth highest peak in Africa and the second highest in the Rwenzori Mountains. Appreciate the magnificent vistas of the summit before returning to Bujjuku camp.

Day 5: Bujuku Camp at 3900m – Elena Camp at 4541m – -5°C

On Day 5 of your 8-day Mount Speke and Mount Stanley Rwenzori trekking expedition, you will arrive at Ellena Camp, a freezing camp situated among large boulders, characterized by thin air, extremely low temperatures, and harsh weather conditions during the rainy season. From Bujuku, traverse the slippery ascent to the gully, navigate the rocky terrain, and be greeted by the large moss-covered boulders leading to Scot Elliot Pass. Proceed onward until you arrive at the camp. Today, you will be welcomed into the camp by the frigid weather, so ensure you stay warm to facilitate a successful summit, after eating a delicious meal and resting for several hours.

Day 6: Depart from Elena Camp at 4541m to ascend Margherita Peak at 5109m and Cheptegei simultaneously, then return to Elena Camp for lunch before descending to Kitandara Lakes Camp.

Awaken at dawn to ready yourself for summit day, the 6th day of your 8-day Mount Speke and Mount Stanley Rwenzori trekking expeditions. Accompanied by your guide, you will ready to embark on your ascent of Margherita Peak at approximately 2 or 3 AM. 

Navigate the steep, occasionally slippery boulders, followed by a more manageable yet still demanding trek through the crampons throughout the Stanley Plateau, culminating in your last ascent to the summit of Margherita Peak. Take pictures because you are one of the few people who have successfully completed the difficult but worthwhile adventure.

Following the remarkable photographs, return to Ellena for a warm lunch, then proceed to Kitandara camp, the penultimate campsite on this core circuit trek.

Day 7: Kitandara (4027m) – Fresh Field Pass (4282m) – Guy Yeoman (3450m)

Make the most of this evening, as it is your final night in the Rwenzori Mountains. Commence the day with a delectable breakfast, after which your guide will lead you on a challenging hike above Kitandara Camp. From this point, you will go to Fresh Field Pass, traversing the elevated, moss-covered trail. Fresh Field serves as the starting point for trekking Mount Baker and Weisman Peak on Mount Luigi di Savoia. Proceed onward, and you will face a monotonous descent via large boulders at the rock shelter of Bujongolo, which served as the base camp for the Duke of Abruzzi during his epic 1906 expedition in the Rwenzori. Subsequently, go to traverse the tussocks once more. You will subsequently encounter a boardwalk and continue till you get in Guyeoman.
