They are home to Margherita Peak, Africa’s third-highest summit at 5,109 meters, and to the largest area of permanent ice on the continent outside Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Unlike those two mountains, which are solitary volcanic cones, the Rwenzori is a block of ancient Precambrian rock, thrust more than five kilometres into the sky along the floor of the Albertine Rift by tectonic forces that have been at work for millions of years. That geological peculiarity, combined with an equatorial location that by all logic should preclude snow, is precisely what has made the range so historically significant: it is a genuine geographical anomaly, and people have been trying to explain it since antiquity.
Long before the range carried the name Rwenzori, it appeared in the work of the Alexandrian geographer Claudius Ptolemy as the Lunae Montes—the Mountains of the Moon—described as the snow-fed source of the Nile. For roughly eighteen centuries that description existed as legend, copied from map to map by generations of cartographers who had never seen the mountains and had no way of confirming whether they were real. It was not until 1888, when the explorer Henry Morton Stanley glimpsed a silver-topped cloud that refused to move, that the Western world began to accept that the legendary range actually existed. Even then, its glaciated summits were not reached until 1906, when an Italian duke, four Alpine guides, and a team of scientists completed one of the most technically demanding expeditions of the era. Today the range is protected as Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site prized for its endemic Afro-alpine flora, its wildlife, and its rapidly retreating glaciers, and it remains, for hikers and mountaineers, one of the last great wild ranges in Africa. This is the story of how the Rwenzori moved from myth to map, from indigenous homeland to colonial curiosity, and finally to one of the most protected and scientifically studied landscapes on the continent.
Where Are the Rwenzori Mountains?
The Rwenzori Mountains sit almost precisely on the Equator, centred close to 0°24′N, 29°57′E, forming a natural border between western Uganda’s Kasese, Kabarole, and Bundibugyo districts and the eastern reaches of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The range runs for roughly 120 kilometers in length and 65 kilometers in width, part of the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the Great Rift Valley that also cradles Lakes Albert, Edward, and George. While the volcanic highlands of Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya were built up from magma over time, the Rwenzori was raised whole as a fault-block range, uplifted between the rift’s parallel fractures, which explains both its extraordinary height and its markedly different geology: dense metamorphic and igneous rock rather than volcanic ash and lava.
On the Ugandan side, the mountain range is protected within Rwenzori Mountains National Park, headquartered near the town of Kasese, roughly 400 kilometers west of Kampala. On the Congolese side, the range continues into Virunga National Park, whose contiguity with the Ugandan park allows for genetic exchange among wildlife populations and forms part of one of the largest transboundary protected-area complexes in Africa.
The range’s six principal massifs: Stanley, Speke, Baker, Gessi, Emin, and Luigi di Savoia, rise from dense lowland and montane forest through bamboo zones and heather moorland into an afro-alpine world of giant lobelias and groundsels, before culminating in bare rock, snow, and the last remaining glaciers on the equatorial line. Because the range straddles two countries and rises through nearly every vegetation zone found in tropical Africa, from roughly 1,000 metres at its foothills to 5,109 metres at Margherita Peak, elevation itself becomes one of the defining features of any visit: a trekker moving through the Rwenzori experiences, in the span of a week, an ecological transect that would otherwise require travelling from the equatorial rainforest to the Arctic tundra.
What Does “Rwenzori” Mean?
The name Rwenzori is not a European invention; it is an anglicised rendering of a name that belonged to the mountain long before any outsider recorded it. Henry Morton Stanley, who first documented the term in 1888, wrote it down as “Ruwenzori” and understood it to mean something close to “rain-maker” or “cloud king,” an entirely fitting description for a range that is shrouded in mist and cloud on the majority of days each year. Later linguistic and ethnographic study has traced the word more specifically to the language of the Bakonzo (also written Bakonjo), the principal indigenous community of the mountain’s Ugandan slopes, whose own name for the range is closer to “Rwenzururu,” meaning “place of snow” or “snow mountain.” Stanley’s anglicization, in other words, preserved the substance of an indigenous name rather than replacing it, which is part of why “Rwenzori” endured through the colonial period and into the present, unlike so many other African place names that were entirely supplanted by European ones.
Older literature and maps use a range of spellings, Ruwenzori, Runsoro, Ruwenjura, reflecting both the difficulty of transliterating Bakonzo and Konjo phonetics into English and Italian orthography, and the fact that different expeditions and colonial administrators recorded what they heard slightly differently. The modern spelling “Rwenzori” was formally standardized during the twentieth century and is now used consistently by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, UNESCO, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s own park authorities. For the Bakonzo and neighboring Baamba (or Bamba) peoples, the mountain’s name has never simply been a geographic label; it carries the cultural and spiritual weight of a range they regard as both ancestral home and sacred presence, a point explored further in the Cultural Heritage section below.
The Mountains of the Moon
Nowhere does the Rwenzori’s historical depth show more clearly than in the story of its ancient name. In the second century of the Common Era, the Alexandrian mathematician and geographer Claudius Ptolemy compiled his Geographia, a work that attempted to systematise everything then known about the world’s geography, largely by drawing on an earlier atlas by Marinus of Tyre. In it, Ptolemy recorded that snow falling on a range he called the Lunae Montes, the Mountains of the Moon, fed the lakes from which the Nile ultimately drew its source. The information, according to Ptolemy’s own account, traced back to a merchant named Diogenes, who was said to have travelled inland from the East African coast around 110 CE and reported both snow-capped peaks and a pair of great lakes in the interior.
What makes this passage remarkable is not its detail, which is minimal, but its persistence. For roughly 1,800 years, European, Byzantine, and Arab cartographers reproduced the Mountains of the Moon on their maps of Africa, from Byzantine copies of Ptolemy’s atlas made in Constantinople in the late thirteenth century, to the Arab geographer al-Idrisi’s maps drawn in Sicily in the twelfth century, to printed Renaissance atlases of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The name survived not because anyone had verified it, but because no better explanation for the Nile’s source existed, and because Ptolemy’s authority as a geographer was considered close to unimpeachable. Scholars researching the origin of the idea have suggested it may not have originated with Ptolemy at all, but derived from an older Arab or East African trading tradition concerning snow-capped peaks in the interior, which Ptolemy then formalised and, through the enduring popularity of his text, propagated across the medieval and early modern world.
The truly remarkable part of the story is that the ancient description, however vague, was substantially correct. Equatorial Africa does contain a range of snow-capped mountains, and meltwater from those mountains genuinely does contribute to the Nile system, chiefly by feeding the rivers that flow into Lake Edward and Lake Albert, which lie along the Nile’s western headwaters. When Stanley finally confirmed the existence of a permanently snow-covered range along the Uganda–Congo border in 1888, geographers and the popular press of the time widely embraced the identification of the Rwenzori with Ptolemy’s legendary range, even though the exact correspondence between the ancient description and the modern mountains remains, to specialists, a matter of informed inference rather than absolute certainty. A simplified timeline of the idea’s evolution looks like this:

Indigenous History Before European Exploration
It is essential to state plainly what is sometimes lost in accounts that begin with European “discovery”: the Rwenzori Mountains had a long and rich human history for centuries, and very likely millennia, before Stanley’s 1888 sighting. The Bakonzo people occupy the mountain’s Ugandan foothills and mid-elevation slopes, while the Baamba (Bamba) community inhabits the western and southwestern flanks, closer to the Semliki Valley and the Congo border. Both groups built their livelihoods around the mountain’s resources, cultivating the fertile volcanic and colluvial soils of the lower slopes, keeping livestock, and drawing on the forest for timber, medicinal plants, and game.
Long before any scientific survey of the range existed, Bakonzo and Baamba communities possessed detailed practical knowledge of the mountain’s terrain, weather patterns, water sources, and seasonal changes — an indigenous ecological knowledge base that later informed, and in many cases directly enabled, the European expeditions that followed, since virtually every successful expedition into the high Rwenzori depended on local guides and porters who already understood the routes. The mountain also carried deep spiritual significance. Certain peaks, forests, caves, and water sources were regarded as sacred, associated with ancestral spirits and, in Bakonzo cosmology, with a mountain deity often referred to as Kithasamba, believed to reside among the peaks. Oral traditions describe the mountain as a living, sentient presence rather than an inert landscape, a belief system that persists in modified form among Bakonzo communities today and that continues to shape how local guides and cultural custodians speak about the range. The Search for the Source of the Nile
To understand why the Rwenzori mattered so intensely to nineteenth-century Europe, it helps to understand the scale of the question its glaciers were thought to answer. The Nile had sustained Egyptian civilization for millennia, and the location of its ultimate source remained one of the most tantalizing unsolved problems in Western geography well into the Victorian era. Early theories, inherited largely from Ptolemy and repeated by generations of cartographers, held that the river originated in snow-capped equatorial mountains feeding a pair of great lakes. Confirming or disproving this required successfully penetrating the East African interior, a feat that had defeated explorers for centuries owing to disease, hostile terrain, and the sheer logistical difficulty of travel far from any coast.
The systematic European search began in earnest in the late 1850s. John Hanning Speke and Richard Burton reached Lake Tanganyika in 1858, after which Speke pushed on alone and became the first European to see Lake Victoria, which he correctly proposed as a Nile source, a claim Burton disputed for years afterward. Speke returned with James Grant in 1860 and, in 1862, identified Ripon Falls as the point where the Nile exits Lake Victoria. Samuel Baker, travelling with Florence von Sass, used information from Speke and Grant to locate a second lake in 1864, which he named Lake Albert and briefly and mistakenly believed was as significant a source as Victoria. None of these expeditions, however, reached the Rwenzori itself or resolved the question of the snow-capped mountains that Ptolemy had described. That resolution would not come for almost another quarter-century, until Stanley’s expedition in the following decade finally connected the legendary range to the physical landscape of the Albertine Rift.
The First European Sightings
The definitive European encounter with the Rwenzori occurred on 24 May 1888, during Stanley’s Emin Pasha Relief Expedition — an expedition mounted to rescue Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer), the German-born governor of Equatoria, who had been cut off from Egypt by the Mahdist uprising in Sudan. Travelling near the Semliki Valley north of Lake Albert, in the vicinity of modern Fort Beni in the DRC, Stanley recorded seeing what he first took for an unusual cloud formation: a silvery, jagged shape that, unlike every other cloud around it, refused to dissipate or move. Only after prolonged observation did he conclude that he was looking at a genuine mountain range with snow-covered upper slopes. A second, clearer sighting in June 1888 confirmed the observation beyond doubt. Notably, Stanley recorded that his Bakonzo companions were entirely unmoved by his excitement, since the mountains and their snow had never been a secret to the people who lived beneath them.

Stanley’s account, delivered first in lectures to the Royal Geographical Society in London and later published in his 1890 book In Darkest Africa, caused a sensation in European scientific and popular circles, precisely because it appeared to confirm Ptolemy’s ancient description after nearly two millennia of uncertainty. Stanley’s own expedition, however, did not attempt to climb the range or explore it in detail; his priority was the relief mission itself. It would be left to later, dedicated scientific and mountaineering expeditions, most significantly the Duke of the Abruzzi’s 1906 campaign, discussed in the First Ascents section, to map, name, and climb the range’s individual peaks. Between 1888 and 1906, several smaller expeditions, including British officers stationed in Uganda and early missionary-explorers, made partial forays onto the lower slopes, gradually building up a picture of the range’s approaches, valleys, and principal massifs, but none reached the glaciated summit zone.
Mapping and Scientific Exploration
The 1906 Abruzzi expedition, discussed in detail below, was as much a scientific undertaking as a mountaineering one, and its scientific legacy is arguably as important as its climbing achievements. The expedition’s naturalists and cartographers produced the first reasonably accurate topographic maps of the range’s central massifs, named and measured its principal glaciers, and collected extensive botanical, zoological, and geological specimens that were later studied in European institutions. The Italian photographer Vittorio Sella, who accompanied the expedition, produced a body of large-format photographs of the range’s glaciers and peaks that remains, more than a century later, an invaluable scientific baseline: modern glaciologists use Sella’s 1906 images to measure precisely how much ice the Rwenzori has lost since, a comparison discussed further in the section on Climate Change and the Glaciers.
Subsequent decades brought increasingly specialized scientific attention. Botanical expeditions through the twentieth century documented the range’s unusual afro-alpine flora, including giant lobelias, giant groundsels, and giant heathers found nowhere else on Earth in such profusion, while geological surveys clarified the tectonic, fault-block origin of the range as distinct from the volcanic history of Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. From the 1950s onward, aerial photography allowed researchers such as those working with the Uganda Geological Survey to produce far more precise maps of glacier extent than had been possible with ground survey alone, and from the 1990s, researchers including Georg Kaser of the University of Innsbruck used these historical maps alongside new fieldwork to build a continuous record of the range’s glacial retreat stretching back to 1906. Since the 2000s, satellite remote sensing has extended this record further, allowing scientists to track glacier area changes on an almost yearly basis, work that continues today and that has made the Rwenzori one of the most closely monitored tropical glacier systems in the world.
The First Ascents
Although Stanley confirmed the range’s existence in 1888, its glaciated summits resisted attempts for almost two decades afterward. Several expeditions in the 1890s and early 1900s, including British and German parties, reached significant altitude on the lower peaks but were turned back by the range’s near-permanent cloud cover, technically difficult glaciated terrain, and the sheer logistical challenge of establishing high camps in one of the wettest mountain environments on Earth. The problem was not simply altitude; it was that the Rwenzori’s upper reaches combine steep rock, crevassed glaciers, and almost daily precipitation in a way that made route-finding and timing extraordinarily difficult for climbers accustomed to the drier conditions of the Alps or the Himalaya.
The range’s central and highest peaks were finally and comprehensively climbed in June 1906 by an expedition led by Prince Luigi Amedeo of Savoy, the Duke of the Abruzzi, an Italian mountaineer already celebrated for earlier climbs on Alaska’s Mount Saint Elias and an attempt on K2. He brought with him a team of experienced Courmayeur guides from Italy’s Val d’Aosta-Joseph Petigax, Cesare Ollier, and the Brocherel brothers among them — men whose expertise in reading glaciated terrain, managing roped travel, and route-finding on ice proved decisive. On 18 June 1906, the Duke of the Abruzzi’s party departed a high camp before dawn and, navigating through the crevasse fields of what is now called the Stanley Glacier, reached the summit of Mount Stanley’s highest point. The Duke named this summit Margherita Peak, in honour of Queen Margherita of Italy; a slightly lower subsidiary summit was named Alexandra Peak, and other peaks in the range were subsequently named Mount Speke, Mount Baker, Mount Emin, Mount Gessi, and Mount Luigi di Savoia, largely in commemoration of earlier explorers and expedition members.
Over the following weeks, the same expedition went on to complete first ascents of the range’s other principal summits, conducting topographic, botanical, and geological surveys along the way. The scale of the achievement, given the equipment of the era, heavy wool and canvas clothing, hemp ropes, and none of the specialised ice tools modern mountaineers rely on, is difficult to overstate, and the route the Duke’s team pioneered via what is now known as the Elena Hut remains, in its essentials, the route most climbing expeditions use to reach Margherita Peak today. In 2016, on the 110th anniversary of the expedition, an Italian-Ugandan military mountaineering team retraced the ascent as a commemorative climb, a reflection of how deeply the 1906 expedition remains woven into the range’s modern identity, particularly for Italian visitors.
Colonial Era and Conservation
Following the confirmation of the range’s existence and its subsequent mapping, the Rwenzori fell increasingly within the administrative reach of the British Uganda Protectorate, established in 1894, and, on the Congolese side, Belgian colonial administration. British authorities recognised relatively early that the range’s forests played a critical hydrological role, feeding the rivers that supplied surrounding agricultural areas and the Nile system itself, and colonial-era forestry policy began to impose restrictions on clearing and settlement at higher elevations, motivated as much by watershed protection as by any broader conservation ethic of the kind that would develop later in the twentieth century.
This period sits in an inevitably complex historical position. Colonial administration brought forest reserves and access restrictions that, from a conservation standpoint, protected large areas of the range from clearance and set important precedents for the protected-area system that exists today. At the same time, colonial boundary-drawing divided the Bakonzo and Baamba communities’ traditional lands between what became Uganda and the Belgian Congo, and colonial administrative structures frequently marginalised these communities politically relative to lowland kingdoms such as Toro, a grievance that fed into the mid-twentieth-century Rwenzururu movement and periods of local unrest that persisted, in various forms, into the 1980s and 1990s. Early organized tourism to the range began modestly during the colonial period, largely among British colonial officers and visiting mountaineers drawn by the Abruzzi expedition’s fame, but large-scale trekking tourism did not develop until Uganda’s political stabilization in the 1990s.
Creation of Rwenzori Mountains National Park
Rwenzori Mountains National Park was formally gazetted in 1991, consolidating what had previously been a forest reserve and game reserve into a single, nearly 1,000-square-kilometre protected area under the management of the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The park’s creation reflected a growing recognition, both within Uganda and internationally, of the range’s exceptional biodiversity value: its multiple distinct vegetation zones, its high level of endemism among Albertine Rift species, and the ecological importance of its forests and glaciers as a water catchment for the surrounding region and, ultimately, for the Nile system itself. The park’s boundaries were drawn to encompass the central and eastern portions of the Ugandan side of the range, including the principal glaciated massifs of Stanley, Speke, and Baker, while the Congolese side of the border falls under the jurisdiction of Virunga National Park.
The years immediately following the park’s creation were turbulent. Between 1997 and 2001, the Rwenzururu rebel militia occupied significant portions of the park, disrupting management, encouraging poaching, and effectively halting tourism, a period that directly informed UNESCO’s decision to place the site on its List of World Heritage in Danger between 1999 and 2004, discussed further below. Since the militia’s withdrawal in the early 2000s, park management has been substantially restored, tourism infrastructure has expanded considerably, and the park has developed increasingly close partnerships with surrounding Bakonzo communities, many of whom now work as guides, porters, and hut staff, a shift explored further in the Evolution of Trekking section.
UNESCO World Heritage Status
Rwenzori Mountains National Park was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1994, at the World Heritage Committee’s 18th session, under criteria (vii). Criterion (vii) recognises sites of superlative natural beauty and exceptional natural phenomena, a designation UNESCO’s own assessment grounds explicitly in the range’s identity as the legendary Mountains of the Moon: a mist-shrouded massif rising nearly 4,000 metres above the floor of the Albertine Rift, combining glaciers, waterfalls, and lakes in a way found nowhere else in Africa. Criterion (x) recognizes sites of outstanding importance for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, reflecting the park’s exceptional concentration of species endemic to the Albertine Rift, including much of its distinctive afro-alpine flora.
In practical terms, the UNESCO inscription commits the Ugandan state to maintaining the property’s “Outstanding Universal Value” through ongoing protection and management, subject to periodic international monitoring, and it has provided a framework for international conservation funding and technical support. As noted above, the park’s inscription came under direct strain during the 1997–2001 militia occupation, leading UNESCO to place the site on its List of World Heritage in Danger from 1999 to 2004; its removal from that list in 2004 reflected the restoration of effective park management and improved security conditions. The park additionally holds Ramsar Wetland status, designated in 2008–2009 in recognition of its internationally significant wetland habitats, and it forms part of a larger transboundary conservation landscape alongside Virunga National Park in the DRC.
Climate Change and the Glaciers
Few subjects generate as much interest, or as much justified urgency, as the fate of the Rwenzori’s glaciers, and few subjects require as much care in reporting the numbers accurately. When the Duke of the Abruzzi’s expedition mapped the range in 1906, scientists later calculated the total glaciated area at approximately 6.5 square kilometres, spread across six separate massifs. By the 1950s, aerial photography showed the glaciated area had fallen to roughly 3.2 square kilometres, and by the 1990s, ground and aerial surveys conducted by Georg Kaser and colleagues put the figure closer to 1.5 to 1.7 square kilometres, with glaciers surviving on only three of the original six massifs: Stanley, Speke, and Baker. Satellite-based analysis has since extended this record: measurements published in 2006 documented a decline from roughly 2.0 square kilometres in 1987 to under 1.0 square kilometre in 2003, while more recent high-resolution remote sensing published in 2024 put the total remaining glaciated area in the Rwenzori at approximately 0.38 square kilometres as of 2021–2022 — a loss of well over ninety percent of the ice measured in 1906.

The scientific consensus attributes this retreat primarily to rising air temperatures rather than to changes in precipitation, with researchers documenting warming trends of roughly half a degree Celsius per decade across the region over recent decades, sufficient on its own to explain the observed loss of ice given how narrow the margin for glacier survival is at these latitudes. Because tropical glaciers exist in a climate with little seasonal temperature variation and intense year-round solar radiation, they are unusually sensitive to even modest warming, which is why researchers consider them an early and unambiguous indicator of broader climatic change. Projections published by glaciologists working in the range have repeatedly suggested that, if current trends continue, the Rwenzori’s remaining glaciers are likely to disappear entirely within the coming decades, following the same trajectory already largely completed on Mount Kenya and substantially advanced on Kilimanjaro. For trekkers today, this means that a Rwenzori expedition to Margherita Peak offers something increasingly rare: the chance to stand on genuine equatorial ice while it still exists, a point our guides discuss candidly with every group attempting the summit route.
The Evolution of Trekking in the Rwenzori
Organised trekking in the Rwenzori has its roots directly in the exploratory expeditions described above. Early visits by British colonial officers and mountaineers in the years following the Abruzzi expedition were opportunistic and largely unsupported by permanent infrastructure; climbers relied on porters recruited locally and camped in improvised shelters. The first purpose-built mountain huts began to appear over the following decades, gradually formalizing the routes first established by the 1906 expedition and its immediate successors, with facilities like the Elena Hut, positioned close to the standard approach to Margherita Peak, becoming fixed points on the route.
The modern era of Rwenzori trekking dates largely to the 1990s, following the park’s gazettement and Uganda’s broader political stabilization. Guiding services professionalized considerably during this period, formalized under the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s licensing system and, on specific trail systems, community-based tourism enterprises that channel a significant share of trekking revenue directly to Bakonzo households near the trailheads. The two principal modern routes, the Central Circuit trail from Nyakalengija and the Kilembe Trail from the town of Kilembe — have each developed their own network of huts, campsites, and dedicated guide teams, and both have seen substantial investment in trail maintenance, boardwalks across the range’s notoriously boggy sections, and improved safety protocols for high-altitude sections near Margherita Peak.
