Detailed 4 Days Mount Kenya Lake Tour Chogoria Naro Moru

Day 1: Chogoria Forest Gate (2650m ASL) to Chogoria Gate Camp (2950m ASL) — 3 hours, 6 kilometers, 300-meter rise

Gather at 7:00 AM at a mutually agreed site in Nairobi to embark on our journey to Chogoria, which will take around three hours. An early lunch will be prepared at Chogoria, where we will converse with our contact crew at the mountain’s base. Post-lunch, utilize a transfer vehicle to reach a forest clearance, followed by a 6km ascent from the first point of the route. The trek through the bamboo forest along the dirt path is soothing, and after three hours, we arrive at the camp (2950m) at approximately 4 PM. We set our camp at the entrance, where we will relish outstanding vistas of the mountain. Weather permitting, we will trek about the Bandas, where we are likely to observe buffalo, bushbucks, and other bird species. The trek provides stunning vistas of Mugi and Ithanguni Hills. Subsequently, dinner is served in the evening. Star gazing is also possible at night thanks to the clearing at the gate. A high-quality camera is essential for capturing moments.

Day 2: Chogoria Forest Gate (2650 m ASL) to Lake Ellis Camp (3450 m) via Nithi Falls

Following breakfast, we commence our day traversing the Hargenia woodland and tussock grasslands. While still beneath the stunning Hargenia trees, we pass a fisheries station on the right after crossing a stream. Following a moderate hour-long hike, we emerge from the forest into the moorland; the Road End camp is around an hour away. We get to see Mugi Hill and the Giant Billiard Table while trekking through the trail. At the Road End camp, we pause to procure some snacks before proceeding to the enchanting Nithi Falls, where we relish our time at the base, appreciating the cascading water. Subsequently, we ascend and turn left to observe the caverns and a picturesque waterfall, another tributary of the Nithi River.

We thereafter return to Road End camp and proceed further into the moorland. One and a half hours later, you will be able to see the beautiful Lake Ellis. The lake is beautifully framed by the Hindu Valley, which also creates an incredible blue and green reflection on the lake. Utterly enchanting! After settling down, we eat lunch. In the afternoon, we can attempt fishing, and those with remaining energy are invited to ascend Mugi Hill. The vistas from the summit of Mugi Hills are breathtaking; the principal peaks are prominently visible, with Ithanguni appearing significantly closer and more welcoming. The sunset here will be spectacular, although you may feel compelled to return to Lake Ellis due to its enchanting qualities. We dine and repose by the lake.

Day 3: Lake Ellis Camp (3450 m ASL) to Mintos Camp (4200 m ASL) – 6 hours, 11 kilometers

It is a picturesque morning by the lake; ensure you awaken early to witness the sunrise, as the initial light touches the tranquil waters, disturbed only by trout feeding. Subsequent to breakfast, we traverse the trail across heather and the golden moorland. After 30 minutes, we arrive at a stream that feeds into the Nithi Falls, where we can refill our water bottles during our short hydration break. From this point, it is a challenging ascent out of the valley, as we bid farewell to Lake Ellis behind us. After two to three hours, we reach the point where our trail and the conventional Chogoria route converge. This will serve as our lunch break location. While we partake in our lunch, we now have a view of Lake Michaelson.

Lake Micaelson on the 4 days Mount Kenya Lake Tour via chogoria - naromoru route to point Lenana peak

Following lunch and a brief leisurely break, we resume our journey along main route toward Mintos Camp, then turning left after 20 minutes. From this juncture, it is a gradual ascent to the Camp. From the camp, the mountain unveils its two principal peaks, Lenana and Batian, assuming it is not covered. In the afternoon, if our energy levels permit, we may hike to Mintos Tarn and thereafter to the Temple, a stunning rock formation located 20 minutes from the camp. In the evening, an early meal is served, after which we go to our tents for relaxation in preparation for an early morning summit.

Day 4: Mintos to Point Lenana to Met Station — Duration: 11-12 hours, Distance: 20 km, Elevation Loss: 3000 m

We commence our expedition at 2 AM towards the principal summits. After an hour traversing a flat, marshy expanse at the valley’s terminus, referred to as Temple Fields, we initiate our ascent to the third highest peak in Kenya.

We reach Point Lenana at 6:00 AM to potentially behold the magnificent spectacle of the sun illuminating the Earth, a truly extraordinary sunrise. Following the capture of photos and the appreciation of the scenery, we descend to Mackinders Camp for breakfast and proceed further down to Met Station. We leave Mount Kenya behind and proceeded to Nairobi.
