 7-Day Mount Kenya Technical Climb Itinerary: Batian/Nelion

Day 1:Nairobi via Nanyuki to Old Moses Camp

Depart from Nairobi in the morning to commence the 7-day Mount Kenya Batian technical climbing expedition. This journey will last 3 to 4 hours, traversing central Kenya in a northern direction, offering picturesque views of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares range in clear weather. A break stop will be made at the Equator before proceeding into Nanyuki, where you will meet the team of cooks and porters and collect your mountain food supplies. Take an additional forty-five minutes to reach the 2,650-meter Sirimon Park gate. Following a picnic lunch and obtaining clearance from the park administration, you will commence the 9km journey through the forest, which serves as a habitat for species, escorted by your guide, cook, and porters to Old Moses Camp (Hut) at an elevation of 3,300m. (3-4 hours of walking).

Day 2 :Old Moses Camp – Shipton Camp

Today, you will awaken at 6:30 AM to pack and ready yourself for the hike. At 7:00 AM, you partake in breakfast, thereafter departing the camp before 8:00 AM to commence the journey through the moorland, observing high-altitude flora, fauna, and birds. The hike ascends the Likii North ridge and then gently progresses through Mackinder’s Valley, offering views of the prominent peaks: Batian, Nelion, and Lenana, which dominate the valley’s head. The valley is abundant in high-altitude flora, hyrax, and avian species, leading to Shipton Camp (Hut) at 4,200 meters, with an estimated duration of 6 to 7 hours to reach by afternoon. Evening meal and overnight stay in the Hut.

Day 3.Shipton Camp

Devote the day to acclimatization by traversing the Northern face of the peaks to Hauseburg Col at 4,600m for acclimatization and lake exploration, before returning to Shipton camp for lunch, supper, and overnight accommodation in the Hut. 3 hours.

Day Four: Shipton Camp

Today marks the day of acclimatization. You will ascend for three hours to reach the summit of Lenana Peak at 4,985 meters.

Ascend the third peak of Mt. Kenya to witness the sunrise, followed by an exceptional vista from the summit extending to Mt. Kilimanjaro in the south. Subsequently, descend to Shipton Camp to recuperate for the remainder of the day and prepare for the final ascent to the highest peak of Mount Kenya, the second highest point in Africa.

Day 5: Shipton Camp – Batian Peak

Start departure from Shipton Hut at 5:00 AM, ascending a steep, stony scree to reach the base of Batian.

Begin the technical ascent at approximately 6:00 am, requiring about 9 hours to reach the summit of Mount Kenya, namely Batian Peak at 5,199 meters. Upon successfully reaching the summit, descend via the same route to the Shipton hut for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6: Shipton Camp – Mount Kenya Bandas

Awaken at approximately 5:30 AM to pack and get an early breakfast. Depart the camp at approximately 6:00 AM. Ascend a loose scree, occasionally obscured by snow, to attain the Simba Col at 4,650 meters, where you will travel to the eastern flank of the mountain. You subsequently descend to Mintos campground at 4,200 meters via the Chogoria trail and see the picturesque cliff overlooking the Gorge’s Valley. Proceed with the descent along the upper rim of the Gorge to the road head campsite for lunch, then continue to Mt Kenya Bandas at 2,950m for a hot shower, dinner, and overnight accommodation in the Bandas. (9-10 hours of hiking).

Day 7:Mount Kenya Bandas – Nairobi

Post-breakfast, descend through the forest for two hours to meet a transfer vehicle, which will transport you off the mountain to Chogoria town, where you will disembark the porters before returning to Nairobi, arriving in the evening.

Your 7-day technical ascent of Mount Kenya, including Batian and Nelion, concludes here. It is strongly advised to engage in relaxing and sunbathing at the beach.
