Suggested Hiking Excursions

Considering the Rwenzori Mountains for climbing during your visit to Uganda? Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions provides complimentary trip guide information regarding the diverse summits comprising the Rwenzori Mountains. The Rwenzori Mountains consist of six peaks that form the range situated in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Other Peaks: The Rwenzori Range is almost 50 km long and contains several other noteworthy summits, including the six major massifs I have just described. The initial summits seen on the usual circuit are the Portal Peaks, a compact group of approximately ten peaks characterized by steep cliffs on their eastern flanks. Kihuma, at 4391 meters, is the highest peak and can be scaled from the area near the John Matte Hut, proceeding north to the marshy Bukurungu Pass and then east to the summit. The range diminishes to the north; nonetheless, the summit of Karangora (3014 meters) is located 20 km north of Fort Portal, about which I possess no information.

Rwenzori Trekking Services also opened a southern trekking route of Kilembe within the park. A significant group of elevated peaks is located to the southwest of Mt. Luigi Di Savoia, with Humphries being the tallest at 4,578 meters. The arid conditions here facilitate enjoyable walking and climbing of these peaks from the upper Nyamugasani Valley.

Located to the southeast of this valley and its numerous lakes is an additional group of peaks, crowned by Rwatamagufa at an elevation of 4253 meters. These can be accessed via multiple paths from the Rwatamagufa valley.

To the west of the biggest peaks of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, numerous notable peaks also exist. Mount Mugule and Wasumeso (4462 meters) offer breathtaking vistas of Mount Stanley under favorable weather conditions, as well as Catafalque to the west of Mount Speke.
