13 Day Mt. Speke, Mt. Stanley, Mt. Baker, Mt. Gessi, Mt. Emin, Mt. Luigi Itinerary

 Day 1: Ascend from Nyakalengeji (1650m) to Nyabitaba Camp (2650m)

The 13 Days Rwenzori trek to Emin, Gessi, Luigi Di Savoia, Baker, Stanley, Speke commences at Nyakalengije. Following an orientation with your hospitable mountain guides, you will embark on a trek through the forest, characterized by towering canopy trees. The distance is around 6.5 kilometers, which can be traversed in 4 to 6 hours. Traversing the dense forest, you will ascend steep inclines using ladders, then cross a bridge before proceeding on stable terrain, ultimately encountering another steep ascent that leads you to the first camp, where you will spend your initial night in the dense forest of Nyabitaba Camp. Enjoy the camp with sights of the Portal peaks right opposite.

 

Day 2: Trek from Nyabitaba at 2650m to Johnmatte at 3505m

You will awaken to the symphonies of birds in the jungle and the thundering noises of the Mubbuku River, located right below Nyabitaba Camp. Today, you will go to Johnmatte Camp, which entails around 8 to 10 hours of traversing rough terrain. Depart from Nyabitaba following a hearty breakfast and proceed to the Kurt Schaffer Bridge, where you will encounter the confluence of two significant rivers in the Rwenzori Mountains, the River Bujuku and the River Mubukku. Allocate time for photography before commencing the trekking upwards. The incline is somewhat steep and will guide you to the bamboo zone, where you will be at an elevation of 3000 meters above sea level. Traverse the dense bamboo forest until you reach the Nyamuleju shelter, where you may rest.  You will traverse the shrubs interspersed with Oldman’s beard trees before arriving at the muddy, slippery banks of the Bujuku River. As you navigate the remarkable mossy woodland, you will be guided to John Matte Camp.

Day 3: Hike from Johnmatte (3505m) to Skull Cave (camping)

Awaken between towering Portal peaks, where the sunrise is distinctly visible from this campsite. After enjoying breakfast, proceed under the guidance of your leader to the skull cave, where you will camp before commencing your adventure towards Mount Gessi. You will traverse the heather and Rupenia zones populated with heather trees. A diverse array of avian species can be observed here, including the Rwenzori Turaco. Adhering to your instructions, you will undertake a steep rise until you arrive at the Skull Cave camp, where you will set up ground tents, fully immersing yourself in the enchanting ambiance of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Day 4: Trek from Skull Cave to Lac de Laluna Camp

Ascending higher provides a clear picture of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. You will gradually traverse the steep areas of its homesteads and forest. The terrain is challenging and difficult; it is quite exhausting yet rewarding, as the panoramic views of the tranquil landscape from the camp where you will be staying tonight are priceless. Upon arrival, set your tents at Lac de Laluna camp and immerse yourself in the camp’s surroundings.

Day 5: Trek from Lac de Laluna to Mount Gessi (4800m)

Awaken early, thoroughly prepared for the impending task of ascending your first peak in the Rwenzori Mountains of Mount Gessi and the Orlando peaks in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, traversing boulders and severe inclines. Upon arrival, you will capture photographs for future reference. You will have a clear view of Congo, following which you will descend down to Lac de Laluna camp, where you will eat a cooked dinner and spend the night in your camp.

 

Day 6: Trek from Lac de Laluna to Mount Emin (4900m)

Upon awakening at your campsite today, you will commence your ascent towards the second peak of your 13-day Rwenzori excursion. As you traverse stunning landscapes, you will ascend the path leading to Mount Emin, where various plant species of the Rwenzori Mountains can be observed. Upon completing the arduous trek, you arrive at Mount Emin; strive to immortalize the splendor of this summit before returning to Lac de Laluna for supper and overnight accommodation.

Day 7: Descend from Lac de Laluna Camp to Bigo Camp (93505m)

Commence the descent that will lead you on foot from Lac de Laluna Camp to Bugo Camp, where you will establish your tents for the night. The descent offers panoramic views of Mount Stanley, Baker, and Speke to your gaze. The downward slope is fairly demanding and necessitates stability to prevent any minor injury. The scenery will captivate you as you enter Bigo camp. Establish a tent at Bigo Camp for your overnight stay.

Day 8: Trek from Bigo Camp to Bujjuku Camp (3900)

Depart from the Bigo camp and commence your journey to the Bujuku camp, situated in the Bujuku Valley. You will descend from the camp and thereafter traverse the marshy tussocks of Bujuku Lake, which will also be visible throughout your descent. Proceed with the exhilarating trek through the swamp area until you arrive at the camp where you will spend the night, situated at the heart of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Day 9: Bujjuku to Mount Speke (Victoria Emanuele)

start your expedition to Mount Speke, traversing steep routes and rugged terrain. Ascend across Dr. Stuhlman’s pass while exploring his contribution to the Rwenzori Mountains. Ascend to the peak of Mount Speke, situated amidst the massive boulders. Take a moment to appreciate the magnificent beauty of the mountains before descending to Bujuku Camp for the night.

 

Day 10: Trek from Bujjuku to Ellena Camp (4541m)

 

After leaving the camp, you will go through Bujuku’s boggy region before starting a difficult climb. Following the difficult ascent, you will traverse bouldering rocks amidst a grove of groundsels before undertaking a further steep ascent to Scott Elliot Pass. From this point, you will proceed onward, across rocky terrain until you arrive at Ellena Camp. Take time to appreciate the camp’s surroundings while observing the extensive magnitude of the Rwenzori from an elevated perspective. Evening meal and overnight stay at Ellena.


Day 11: Ellena to Margherita Peak (5109m) to Kitandara Camp

 

Awakening at an early hour for the challenge, you will commence your ascent to the summit at 3 AM, traversing the boulders past Ellena. Ultimately, you will traverse the Stanley Plateau and an open expanse before embarking on the ascent to the glacier. Utilizing your crampons, traverse the glacier, and ultimately, you will find yourself at the summit with the sunrise directly overhead. Allocate time to capture photographs amidst the clouds, following which you may commence your descent to Kitandara camp, situated adjacent to the banks of Lower Kitandara Lake.

 

Day 12: Kitandara to Baker to Freshfield Pass.

 

Rise early, and following breakfast, proceed on your adventure to conquer Mount Baker. Ascend to Freshfield Pass, then go take in the stunning vistas of dispersed flora on the rocky terrain. Upon reaching Baker, proceed to Fresh Field Pass, where you will construct a tent for the night.

 

Day 13: Fresh Field to Weisman Peak to Guyeoman

Awaken at dawn and commence your ascent to the final summit of your 13-day, 6 Peaks Rwenzori trekking Expedition. Today, you will traverse the rocky terrain of Fresh Field Pass, ascending the steep slopes of the area. Upon arrival at Weisman Peak, you will take time to appreciate the tranquil beauty and surroundings, capture photographs, and subsequently descend to Guyeoman Camp.
