3 Days Rwenzori Mahoma Trail Trek

This 3 days Mahoma trail trek will allow you to spot 70 mammal species and 217 bird species present in Rwenzori, including 19 species peculiar to the Albertine Rift, along with some of the rarest plants globally. Itinerary at a glance: 3 Days Mahoma Trail Trek

Day 1: Nyakalengija 1560m – omukakiza camp 2500m

 

Day 2: omukakiza camp 2500m – Lake Mahoma camp 3000m.

 

Day 3: Lake Mahoma camp through Nyabitaba camp to nyakalengijja.

Day 1: Trek Nyakalengija  1560m to Omukakiiza 2500m

 

Following breakfast, you will proceed to the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services headquarters, situated at an elevation of 1,646 meters. At this juncture, you will receive a briefing from your guide or the tourist officer. The 3 day Mahoma trail trek commences via the plantations and residences of the Bakonzo, the indigenous mountain inhabitants, progressively advancing to cultivated plots and elephant grass before entering the forested area. This journey traverses the unspoiled rainforest of Kyambogho Ridge, offering a vista of the Mubuku Valley, before ascending the densely wooded ridge, which hosts several primates, including the black and white colobus monkey, blue monkey, and occasionally the L’hoest monkey, culminating at Omu’kaKizza Rest Camp at an elevation of 2,977 meters. Here, you will appreciate the stunning vistas of the Rwenzori foothills and Kasese town, situated 2,160 meters below.

 

Day 2: Trek Omukakiiza 2500m to Mahoma Lake 3000m

 

On the second day, you will trek to Mahoma Lake, ascending a narrow moss-laden ridge to an elevation of 3,515 meters, via a stunning forest of towering heather adorned with vibrant green moss. You will trace the tracks of mountain elephants through the bamboo and heather forest and observe them drinking at the hot spring. The ridge will guide you to the Rukenga Valley, where you will encounter the perennial flowering plant (Mimulopsis eliotti) and the colossal lobelia. You thereafter proceed to Mahoma Lake Camp for the night. From Mahoma Lake, if the sky is clear, one may observe Mt. Baker, Mt. Stanley, and the Portal Peaks.

 

Day 3: Mahoma Lake to Nyakalengija

Following breakfast, proceed for a stroll around the lake, then descend past the Nyabitaba ranger station and the Mpanga ridge to join the Mubuku valley, which is inhabited by three-horned chameleons. Following a brief break in Nyabitaba, descend to Nyakalengija/Kasese town.
